Character Background
• History: here• Core Relationships:Ikaris - While Sersi has a relationship with each of the other Eternals, none of them really quite measure up to what she has with Ikaris. The two of them, at Ajak’s suggestion, fell into a romantic relationship and fell in love. They were together for thousands of years until he essentially ghosted her when they were nearing the Emergence. It was rough for Sersi, who gives her entire being to those she’s with, be it romantically or platonically. She waited for him and he never returned, so she moved on- but still held space in her heart for him. Even when they reunited and she learned why he left and why they’d grown apart, she held no ill will toward him, just sadness that they don’t have the same feelings for Earth.
Dane Whitman - After Ikaris left her, Sersi eventually moved on and found love again with a human named Dane. While she kept her true nature from him, he never pressed and accepted her non-answers. He is, perhaps, an extension of her true love: humanity. He makes her smile, laugh, and reminded her that things aren’t horrible when she was in a very lonely time of her life. While her time with Dane pales in comparison to her time with Ikaris, it’s still apparent that she loves him just the same. Even as Ikaris showed back up, she didn’t drop Dane immediately for him… and after everything happened, she still returned to him and he assured her that he didn’t care what she was, he still loved her.
Ajak - The original Prime Eternal, Ajak was like the mother figure for all of them- Sersi looked to her for guidance. She held a deep love and respect for Ajak, and was gutted by her death.
Sprite - Only second to Ikaris, Sersi spent almost as much time with Sprite. When Ikaris left her, Sprite joined her years later only to learn that they were both lonely. While Sprite’s jealousy for Sersi always simmered under the surface, the two women were still there for each other (and Sersi was, bless her heart, blind to it anyways). Sersi masqueraded as the unaging Eternal’s aunt while they resided in London.
The rest of the Eternals - While she might not have been AS close to the rest of the Eternals, she still had a deep sense of camaraderie with them and respected all of them for all of their strengths and flaws. While she may not understand or agree with the reasoning behind some choices on a personal level, she refrains from judging them for said choices. See: Druig for leaving and keeping those humans under his spell for so long, or Kingo refusing to join them to keep Tiamut from emerging.
Humankind - Sersi’s driving force is her love for humankind. Throughout her 7,000 years on Earth, she’s always seen befriending, learning from, and teaching humans. Whether it’s her helping the people of old empires farm, build their homes, or cook… or in the more modern times of her teaching young students at the museum- and doing everything she can to prevent them from being harmed when the unexpected earthquake hits.
Character Personality Through Key Moments
(2+) Positive Experiences: At her very core, Sersi is compassionate, caring, and loving. Since the moment she saw Earth, she fell in love with it… and the moment they stepped onto the planet, she fell in love with the people there. She connected with humankind the most out of the group of Eternals, eager to spend her time learning their languages and cultures as they continued to thrive under their protection. She always aims to teach and learn from humans as they protect. When she learned the truth of their mission, all she could think of was the people they spent the past 7,000 years protecting and determined that any plan that would kill innocent people wasn’t “the right thing to do”. It was the reality of the mission that led Ikaris to leave her, because he saw how much she loved humanity and he couldn’t imagine how much it would break her heart to learn what was required of them.
Friendly and sociable, she could be seen throughout the movie interacting the most with humans: helping them with building, planting, and cooking. But it didn’t extend just to the humans, Sersi can be seen being (quietly) helpful to the other Eternals throughout the years. She offers Phastos an idea to compromise when Ajak turns down his way-too-soon invention. She’s the one to talk Druig into letting the humans he’s controlling go.
She sincerely sees the best in people- human and Eternal alike.
When the Emergence began, Sersi’s initial plan was to have Druig put Tiamut to sleep until they could figure out a plan that didn’t involve destroying Earth for Arishem’s grand plan. As devoted as she was to their creator, she was determined to not let the people of Earth suffer… and when Druig is unable to follow through with their plan, Sersi pushed past her self doubt and found the courage required to go through with a completely different plan on the fly that centered around her being the Eternal to stop Tiamut from awakening.
(2+) Negative Experiences:Despite her eventually finding her courage to save Earth, Sersi grappled with her sense of self for thousands of years- leading up to that final moment. Though she excitedly explained her powers, and often used them in practical ways to help humans, she wasn’t a fighter- and when it came to defeating the deviants, she wasn’t that helpful. Although she wouldn’t change a thing, she found herself stuck in almost a damsel in distress role for most of her life. She was on the support wing of the group, and not even support in the sense of being able to heal others like Ajak.
She doubted herself so much that even as they prepared to stop the Emergence, Sersi questioned why Ajak chose her to lead the others. She wasn’t a leader by any means- just because she was friendly and tried to be as helpful as she could with the others, it didn’t mean they would follow her lead. Ikaris would have been the better choice. It was easy for Sersi to go down the mental spiral of ‘why me’ and believe that she wasn’t good enough- it’s only because Thena gave her a pep talk that she even managed to pull herself out of the negative thoughts and do what needed to be done.
Hinted throughout the years in the movie, Sersi is chronically late to things: when the Eternals had a meeting on the Domo and then years later when she’s shown running late to her very human job. She gets lost in thought or distracted helping others so often that those who know her have started to expect it.
When Ikaris left her without telling her, Sersi waited for him for years before she decided to just move on. But in that time, she became lonely and more withdrawn than she would normally be. She pined for her absent husband- and even now that she’s found some form of happiness again, still wears the necklace he gave her at their wedding with the rock she created to match his eyes. While this loneliness and grief wasn’t outright shown in the movie, Sprite mentions it to Ikaris while Sersi mourns Ajak outside. She said that Ajak sent her to check on Sersi and the two of them realized they were both lonely- so they helped each other. For Ajak to send the other Eternal to check on Sersi, she must have sensed that she was in a not-so-good way with the departure of her husband.
Deer Country Attributes
• Canon Powers: Matter Transmutation - she can change the matter of one thing to another (ie: a rock to water, water to wood, wood to metal, etc. all interchangeable). Outside of the unimind/the growing power from the emergence, however, she’s incapable of transforming sentient beings.
She’s also immortal and because she is technically not “alive” (she’s a fancy robot), she has an enhanced body, essentially. The wiki link will go as far as to consider her abilities and physiology super-human, but I think that’s a bit of an exaggeration.
• Blood Type: warmblood
• Omen: A giraffe
• Blessed Day: September 24 - if she had an Earth birthday, I feel like she would be a Libra
• Patron Pthumerian: Never Mind
• Blood Power Manifestation: n/a
Writing Samples
One:'Everything dies except us- because we were never alive.'Apart from the initial shock of turning from squid to human, this is the first thought to enter the Prime Eternal's mind. How could that be true? Her brow furrowed as she slowly managed to sit up in the sand and her arms cradled her knees close to her chest. She was just a squid- she was very much alive in that sense... but was that normal? She couldn't tell.
Sersi remained that way for some time, quietly contemplating her existence when she only just now remembered her own name, and watching the world move around her. Others appeared to be in the same circumstance as she was, some getting up and trying to find their way elsewhere, some sitting and gathering their senses just as she was.
But what's more was there were some, clothed, that greeted them. Clothing would be nice- it seemed to be the time of year where the chill was thawing, but it was still just on the edge of chilly. Despite yearning for something to wear, however, she doesn't get up. Instead she just holds her hands out to catch some of the flower petals until she's approached.
“It's beautiful, isn't it?” It’s an echo of words she's certain she's said before- but then again, who wouldn't have said that at some point? She looked up at the person joining her and offered them a small smile.
